Subway Station Westfriedhof, Munich

The decisive design element in the subway station Westfriedhof are the rough surfaces of the tunnel walls, the result of concrete cast in an earthen formwork, and the sharp contrast to the precisely fabricated interior build out of the station. The lighting concept developed by Ingo Maurer, further emphasizes these contrasting elements, by utilizing colorful "light domes" located above the station platform and seemingly mystical, and subdued blue light in the tunnel construction. The service counter areas located at the mezzanine level mediate, with their red stucco surfaces, between the worlds above and below grade level.
